A-Level Biology
Course Details
Course Details: Biology is taught mainly as a content-led approach. Teaching of practical skills is integrated with the compulsory core practicals. They are both assessed through written papers and, for A-Level only, a teacher assessed Practical Endorsement. The Edexcel Biology specification aims to encourage learners to develop:
- Essential knowledge and understanding of different areas of the subject and how they relate to each other
- A deep appreciation of the skills, knowledge and understanding of scientific methods
- Competence and confidence in a variety of practical, mathematical, and problem-solving skills
Modules Studied
The specification is divided into topics, each covering different key concepts of Biology:
- Topic 1 – Biological molecules
- Topic 2 – Cells and viruses
- Topic 3 – Classification
- Topic 4 – Exchange and transport
- Topic 5 – Energy for biological processes
- Topic 6 – Microbiology and pathogens
- Topic 7 – Modern genetics
- Topic 8 – Origins of genetic information
- Topic 9 – Control systems
- Topic 10 – Ecosystems
What can I do after I have completed this course?
Biology brings a lot of scientific theory and thinking together and a good A-Level grade in Biology demonstrates that a student can apply themselves in problem solving, practical skills and scientific writing; all of these qualities are highly prized in today’s competitive job market.
Biology is a good subject for the majority of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and maths) careers and you will find biology is well respected and essential/beneficial if you wish to take up: medicine, biomedical sciences, physiotherapy, sports science, ecologist, botanist, pharmacist, pathologist, veterinary care, etc.
