Advanced Level Physical Education (OCR)

What will I gain from the course?

The PE programme of study provides students with exciting opportunities to lead a healthy and active lifestyle by choosing from a variety of roles (performer or coach) and activities in which to participate in physical activity. The content of the course is designed to provide a route to further study in Higher Education in PE, as well as related career opportunities.

Course Content

The course is allocated 6 lessons per week, where you will study the following content:

AS Units:

  • Unit 1- Physiological Factors Affecting Performance
  • Unit 2- Psychological and Socio-cultural themes in PE
  • Unit 3- Performance within Physical Education

 

A2 Units:

  • Unit 1- Physiological factors Affecting Performance
  • Unit 2- Psychological Factors Affecting Performance
  • Unit 3- Socio-cultural and Contemporary Issues
  • Unit 4- Performance within Physical Education

 

Method of Assessment

AS Units- 70% written exam (2 and ½ hours) & 30% practical assessment (performing/coaching at 1 sport and EPIP)

A2 Units- 70% written exam (2 and ½ hours) & 30% practical assessment (performing/coaching at 1 sport and EPIP)

Btec Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Sport (Edexcel)

What will I gain from the course?

This national extended certificate offers a specialist qualification that focuses on key knowledge and practical skills that are required in the appropriate vocational sector. It offers an engaging programme for those who are clear about the area of employment they wish to enter. It is equivalent to one A-level, and the programme can be developed to allow learners to study complementary qualifications without duplication of content.

Course Content

The course is allocated 6 lessons per week, where you will study the following 4 units across years 12 and 13:

  • Unit 1- Anatomy & Physiology
  • Unit 2- Fitness Training & Programming for Heath, Sport & Well-being
  • Unit 3- Professional Development in the Sports Industry
  • Unit 4- Sports Leadership

Method of Assessment

The new BTEC Nationals use a combination of assessment styles – both practical and written. There are two 90 minute written exams, applied tasks set and marked by the Board and the remaining units are internally assessed by your teacher.

The course is equivalent to 1 A-Level at grade A* (distinction*), A (distinction), C (Merit) or E (Pass)

Level 2 Award in Community Sports Leadership

What will I gain from the course?

This post-16 qualification teaches generic leadership skills such as organisation, planning, communication and teamwork through the medium of sport. It is a fun and practical qualification with no entrance requirements or final examinations to sit. All candidates will undertake a first aid course as part of this qualification, and must also complete 10 hours demonstration of leadership within the community.

Course Content

The Sports Leaders Award is allocated 2 lessons per week, where you will study the following units:

  • Unit 1- Plan, lead and evaluate a sport / activity session
  • Unit 2- Develop leadership skills
  • Unit 3- Lead a session to improve fitness
  • Unit 4- Adapting sports activities
  • Unit 5- Establish and maintain a safe sport / activity session
  • Unit 6- Organise and deliver a sports event or competition
  • Unit 7- Pathways in sport and recreation

Method of Assessment

All candidates will undertake a first aid course as part of this qualification, and must also complete 10 hours demonstration of leadership within the community.

In this one-year course, you will be required to complete small written tasks within each unit and will then assessed in practical situations, using you newly-acquired skills.

All students will also be required to volunteer for 1 hour on a weekly basis to support the coaching/leading of extra-curricular sports clubs or PE lessons. Please see Mr Ward for more information.

Year 12/13 Physical Education (Enrichment Option)

What will I gain from the course?

This enrichment option is an opportunity for students to continue representing the school in either football (boys) or netball (girls). There will also be the opportunities to maintain a balanced, active and healthy lifestyle by participating in fitness and sporting activities at external facilities (local leisure centre). The subject will also allow students to develop coaching/leadership skills by supporting a KS3/4 extra-curricular sports club or PE lesson. This is a fun and practical opportunity with no entry requirements or final examinations to sit.

Course Content

Year 12/13 Physical Education is allocated 2 lessons per week, where you will participate in a combination of the following two activities to maintain a balanced, active and healthy lifestyle:

  • Extra-curricular sport (football or netball training/fixtures against others schools)
  • Undertake fitness/sporting activities at local leisure facilities to maintain a balanced, health and active lifestyle 

Method of Assessment

There is no assessment for year 12/13 Physical Education but students will be required to volunteer for 1 hour on a weekly basis to support the coaching/leading of a KS3/4 extra-curricular sports club or PE lesson. This time will be organised to not clash with other timetabled lessons or school commitments.
